Knit Pattern: The Leia Wig

The inspiration for this pattern came to me one day while shopping in a sporting goods store. I saw this fabulous full length white down coat that reminded me of a Princess Leia outfit. I thought, wow, now that would look great with a knitted ‘wig’ hat. And so, Leia was born.

Materials:
Misti Alpaca Chunky, 2 skeins
100% baby Alpaca
100g/108yd

Thank you viewing this pattern. It is now available at my etsy store:

This is great, but I have to be the giant geek - the character is 'Leia,' not 'Leah'. :)

I just have to tell you how hilllarious I think that is. I like to wear my hair in little buns on the side of my head, but this takes it to an all new awesome level. :)

After seeing Hallowig on knitty, I thought my Star Wars obsessed sister would love a knitted Leia hat. (When we were kids she was Leia for 4 Halloweens.) I was going to try to design one... thank you, for doing this so beautifully. I would never have gotten around to it. You are glorious and generous to send this out. Thank you so much.

I gotta say... I said to my husband when he showed me... "I gotta say, I'd wear it... but it would take nerve... but every brunette little girl wanted to be Leia in the 70s... "

He said, "I was thinking you'd look kinda cute in it... I'd pounce ya... every guy wanted to do Leia at some point..."

That is great! It's nice of you to put the pattern up. The Misti Alpaca Chunky is the perfect yarn for it, too.

Boing Boing pointed me in your direction and your pattern is just as wonderful as I could have imagined. I'm going to post a link to your blog on my s'n'b message board. They will just die!! think I know what we're all going to be for Halloween.

Speaking as someone who shares the Princess' name...that hat is just a hoot! I've always wanted to dress as her for Halloween, so maybe I'll have to give the pattern a try some year!

Oh, that's hysterical! My PhD-candidate daughter sent me the link to this post; now I get to ask her if this means she wants me to knit her one?

Back in high school (in the day), I used to wear my real hair like this when I was in a Leia mood. Now that I have short (gray) hair, THIS is what I need. Many thanks!!

omg - i LOVE it! my fam and i were a star wars family last halloween. hubby was a jedi and our daughter maggie and i did a mother/daughter role flip flop - she was padme and i was leia. my costume came with the most ill-fitting wig. i may have to knit this up for star wars redux this halloween!

Lisa said...

Wow - that takes creativity to knit that one. It looks great.

However-I think you will make a lot of the knitter's partner's pretty happy when they see their girl in that thing.

didn't most boys have a crush on Princess Leia? ha ha ha

I hate to be stupid, but what do you mean by sk st on Round 2? I cast on yesterday and purled the first round, but I'm stuck. I'm dying to get this thing knit and wear it to the Austin Knit-Out next month! Thanks for creating such an amazing pattern and sharing it with us!!

Teddy Leia and Kitty Solo

Here's a picture of my teddy wearing your creation (I used cheaper materials for the first run of it)... the buns are a bit overstuffed. But, I think it will tighten up great once I give it a run through some warm water and through hot dryer for 10 minutes.

Oh what a cool pattern. Thnanks for posting it!!!!

How totally awesome of you to share your pattern. You know that the Star Wars convention is in Indianapolis in the spring, & its HUGE! Storm troopers, jedi's etc walking around the streets in downtown next to the convention center. You should seriously consider going there with a bunch of these knit up- you could make a killing! :-) lol

absolutely brilliant!

I'm always on the lookout for warm Halloween costume ideas. Around here it's not uncommon for the weather to be in the teens or single digits fahrenheit by then. I use Halloween also as a good excuse to knit something a bit on the goofy side.

Anonymous said...

This is the coolest thing I've seen in a long while. I just love it!

Woolly Wormhead said...

Brilliant! Kinda wish I'd had the idea now ;)

Surely you've gotta ask for photos from folk who use your pattern? A Leia gallery?

Acornbud said...

Wow that is way cool. Thanks for sharing.

We love Geekery, but what would be really cool is a Twilek hat! (You know, with the big dreadlocky things) you could then use it as a scarf too. :-D

My SIL & I knit one for my niece's Halloween costume, and it was perfect! We cheated a little on the buns (knit st st, flat, and let it roll up), but otherwise followed your pattern. It was a huge hit!
